(Matambú Magazine-Agro)- After a long period of drought that affected the agricultural sector of Algeria a year ago, this North African country, known as one of those importing wheat on the continent, will take advantage of new favorable climatic conditions to relaunch its cereal production.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in its report of September 30, Algeria could harvest nearly 3.3 million tons of wheat during the 2022/2023 agricultural campaign, compared to 2.4 million tons during the previous year, which is a production increase of 38%, all on a sown area which should stagnate at 2 million hectares.
The return to normal weather and climatic conditions is what will drive this improvement.
USDA forecasts indicate a rising yield of 1.5 tons/ha against 1.2 tons/ha previously.
However, with these prospects sketched out, the country is still far from its peak production of 4 million tons of wheat reached during the 2018/2019 financial year.
